TMJ Dysfunction and Myofunctional Therapy on the MS Gulf Coast

Does your jaw feel tired, tight, or uncomfortable?

At Gulf South Myofunctional Therapy, Felicia Morris, COM®, evaluates the oral muscle patterns that may be contributing to jaw strain. With specialized training in TMD and orofacial pain, she creates an individualized therapy plan focused on how your tongue, lips, and jaw move and rest.

Maybe you notice yourself clenching during the day or while sleeping, have trouble opening comfortably, or feel tension when you chew.

Jaw symptoms can have several causes, and understanding how your muscles work is an important part of finding the right care.

How can myofunctional therapy help?

Myofunctional therapy uses guided exercises and habit awareness to improve oral muscle coordination. Depending on your evaluation, therapy may address jaw movement, tongue resting posture, lip position, and patterns of muscle tension or clenching. The goal is to help you develop more comfortable, efficient ways to use your oral muscles.

TMJ pain does not have one universal cause or treatment. If your symptoms need dental or medical care, Felicia can help you identify the appropriate next step and coordinate with your other providers.

What happens at an evaluation?

We’ll talk about your symptoms, when they occur, and what treatment you’ve already tried. Felicia will assess your orofacial musculature, oral resting posture, movement patterns, & discuss your sleep quality.

She’ll then explain whether myofunctional therapy may be a useful part of your care plan. You’ll have time to ask questions and understand the recommendations before moving forward.
